While Rutgers' dominant Quick Lane Bowl victory Dec. 26 offered a proper sendoff to the Scarlet Knights' first season in the Big Ten, their coaching staff is already looking forward to 2015 — even if their players have a few weeks off.

Rutgers plays quarterback shuffle in another Big Ten loss to Wisconsin

PISCATAWAY — The injury was clear. The insult came later.

Rutgers continued to stick with a visibly hobbled Gary Nova on Saturday despite an offense stuck in High Point Solutions Stadium’s rain-soaked turf.

But with backup Chris Laviano on the sideline until the third quarter, it didn’t matter who was under center in another lopsided loss, this time a 37-0 decision to Wisconsin, its first shutout since 2002 against Notre Dame.

Rutgers football unofficial scrimmage stats: Gary Nova, Chris Laviano shine

Head coach Kyle Flood said Saturday night that Steve Longa, Robert Martin and Josh Hicks were held out and are expected back Monday.

Andrew Turzilli, Kaleb Johnson, Nadir Barnwell, Dre Boggs and Darius Hamilton should be back midweek, Flood said.

Rutgers' Chris Laviano reacts to being named backup quarterback

PISCATAWAY — After a muddled spring, head coach Kyle Flood said Chris Laviano saw such few reps that he prolonged Rutgers' quarterback competition.

Flood watched enough of the redshirt freshman Tuesday to name him the team's backup. Laviano said he's happy for the trust.
