PISCATAWAY — Here are some quick hits from Tuesday's practice, the first from Rutgers' bye week after Saturday's victory against Michigan:
Head coach Kyle Flood announced freshman Josh Hicks will move from running back to free safety this week. The position change could be temporary for depth purposes, he said. "He realized he wanted to get on the field and help the football team with as many reps as he could," Flood said. "I felt good with that the entire time." ...
Senior running back Savon Huggins (shoulder) will take a medical redshirt this season. Flood said he plans on having Huggins back next year. "My expectation is that he'll be back next year," Flood said. ...
Flood expects backup quarterback Chris Laviano to take more reps than usual this week during team periods. Rutgers will hold practices Wednesday and Thursday, with a possible light scrimmage Thursday. "We'll run a few more team periods this week to make sure he gets more work," Flood said. ...
Flood said the coaching staff will spend more time this week with Rutgers' third and fourth teams, who will get more on-field work while the first- and second-team units lift later in practice. It's Rutgers' typical bye week routine. "It's a great opportunity to check where they are at this point and also to improve them," Flood said. "I said to that group, 'There's going to be somebody in that group that's going to help us win a football game this year.' I just don't know who it is."
