By the numbers: Rutgers football continues to show high volume of base offense looks

Through five games, coordinator Ralph Friedgen has an idea of what works for Rutgers' offense and its ceiling with certain packages and personnel.

That became even more clear in Rutgers' 31-6 victory against Tulane on Saturday, as Rutgers ran more than 80 percent of its plays with a fullback on the field.

Fullback Michael Burton saw the second-most snaps in consecutive weeks. At the Z receiver, meanwhile, four different players are sharing reps opposite Leonte Carroo.

"Now with Andre (Patton) coming back, we have a little bit more flexibility in the personnel groups," head coach Kyle Flood said Monday. "You saw some four‑wide receiver sets that we had not really used before that just because we didn't have enough people we felt like to practice it."

Of note: A week after playing only nine snaps, Janarion Grant appeared on an unofficial 24 percent of Rutgers' plays against Tulane. Patton's return from an upper-body injury will set a new order on the rotation.

In the backfield, meanwhile, Flood said Rutgers will split snaps by drives. Desmon Peoples started and out-repped Justin Goodwin, 37-22, and out-touched him by nine.

"That's pretty much what I needed," Peoples said of more touches. "Once I get into a rhythm, there's no knocking me out of it."
