By the numbers: Rutgers keeps game plan simple against Navy

PISCATAWAY — While Rutgers might get some good news in the coming days that will help its multiplicity on offense, Saturday's victory against Navy was all about getting back to basics.

A week after quarterback Gary Nova threw five interceptions against Penn State, coordinator Ralph Friedgen put a stranglehold on play calls. Nearly 64 percent of Rutgers' plays came with its base personnel on the field.

That meant the traditional sense of a pro-style offense that head coach Kyle Flood covets. Fullback Michael Burton — once doubling at tight end — played 61 snaps, second most on offense.

A few more notes:

-Tight end Nick Arcidiacono made his season debut after missing the first three games with an upper-body injury. He played 11 snaps, estimating he ran a pass route once or twice.  "It feels incredible," Arcidiacono said. "I've been itching to get back out here, being hurt in the beginning of the year. I can't wait for next week."

-Andrew Turzilli and John Tsimis are now pretty much playing comparable snaps at the Z receiver spot. Turzilli only played two snaps in the season opener because of health issues. "He usually rotates us every couple of drives," Turzilli said of Friedgen. "There comes a time where he just throws one of us in there, based on the play."

-Because of Friedgen's grip, slot receiver Janarion Grant played a season-low nine snaps. He still managed three targets, second most on the team.

Rutgers' unofficial formation count against Navy:
