Rutgers' Philip Nelson's dismissal leaves the Scarlet Knights in a less comfortable position at quarterback entering the 2015 season.
With more than 2,100 career passing yards, the Minnesota transfer likely would have lobbied heavily to start, with Chris Laviano and Giovanni Rescigno factoring in.
Below is a look at Rutgers' quarterback picture in 2015, provided Gary Nova starts and plays through the majority of this season:
— Mike Bimonte (senior in 2015): Rutgers' projected PAT holder has never appeared during a game. He was largely viewed as an add-on once Nova flipped from a commitment to Pittsburgh. Bimonte opened eyes in the team's first spring scrimmage.
— Laviano (sophomore in 2015): Head coach Kyle Flood has insisted he must see more from Laviano given his thin résumé with Rutgers' first-team offense. Will another long layoff follow if Nova earns a starting role and Bimonte backs him up?
— Rescigno (redshirt freshman in 2015): The 6-foot-4 commit from Michigan was a late add after a decommitment left a hole in Rutgers' recruiting class. Analysts praise his mobility. He could suffer Laviano's same early fate.
— TBD transfer/commit: Could Rutgers dip into the transfer pool again? Chances are it'll seek a quarterback commit again in its 2015 class. A starter here is unlikely, given Rutgers' early standing in the Big Ten.

Any chance of Rankin changing his mind and staying with RU? He seemed real torn up about leaving when he made the announcement... Always thought his upside was right there with Laviano.
Blake has moved on. He had his struggles in spring practice, just like the rest of Rutgers' inexperienced quarterbacks. This is, for better or worse, the group you'll likely look at in 2015.
Jake Rodrigues from Oregon, possibly?
