The busiest man on the field Thursday in Fresno, Calif.? That'd be Jamal Merrell, the 6-foot-4 linebacker Rutgers often asked to play along the perimeter.
Merrell finished with eight tackles, second on the team, but no defender endured more responsibility in coordinator Dave Cohen's first outing.

Steve Longa spent the early part of the 2012 season in a trance.

Even at 6-foot-4, Andre Patton still looks up to Brandon Coleman.
The wiry true freshman has drawn head coach Kyle Flood's attention, namely through Saturday's first scrimmage at High Point Solutions Stadium. For his part, Patton has tried to emulate the hulking 6-foot-6 Coleman, the blueprint for Rutgers' receivers.
