PISCATAWAY — Rutgers' Steve Longa and Kevin Snyder officially swapped positions Tuesday, but the differences are minimal in the team's defensive framework.

With only one traditional defensive end, the 'R' end also has some coverage responsibilities, making it almost another outside linebacker. In that sense, Longa said, the WILL linebacker plays inside.

IN PRINT: Longa, Snyder say position moves aren't big deal

"We’re mostly in the box most of the time," he said. "It’s only when we we get detached that the WILL is outside the box. Most of the time the WILL and MIKE are inside linebackers in our defense."

“I would say the main thing for me (at MIKE linebacker) that’s a little different is playing behind our nose guard rather than the three technique," Snyder said. "That’s the only thing I have to get used to, having to play off of it in certain plays.”

What's a subtle difference in new defensive coordinator Joe Rossi's playbook?

“It’s kind of taking the next step in your reads," Snyder said, "whether you’re reading guards, tackles, and then reading our defensive line, how they fit (and fill certain holes) and we have to fit off of them in certain plays and just run fits in general.”
