Quick hits from Rutgers football training camp practice
PISCATAWAY — Here are some quick hits from Monday night's second practice, the last of Rutgers' double sessions during training camp:
Rutgers' numbers game at corner has improved. Nadir Barnwell (ankle), Dre Boggs and Anthony Cioffi returned to practice, but head coach Kyle Flood referred to running-back-turned-corner Justin Goodwin as a starter. "Now we have to get them back to 100 percent to see what they can do," Flood said. Flood said Goodwin could still play offense despite not sitting in on meetings. ...
After reviewing tape from Saturday's scrimmage, Flood couldn't discount the absence of two defensive starters. "(If) you take Darius Hamilton and Steven Longa off a defense, it makes a big impact," he said. "I don't know that we needed a scrimmage to tell us that." ...
Flood said Delon Stephenson would start at safety if the season began tonight. "That's a day-to-day situation, and the guy who practices better is going to play," he said. ...
CBS was at practice filming a segment for the network's new Thursday Night Football. It focused on Rutgers' use of Schutte helmet cams. Flood said the team's quarterbacks, linebackers and safeties have used them. "You get one more piece of information (for) what it is they're looking at before the play, at the snap and post-snap," Flood said. "When you're trying to make decisions ... any information you can get and all the information you can get, you want."
